Žatec and its surroundings is a region well known all around the Czech Republic and in the world with hop growing already for centuries. The first notes about hop growing are from the year 1004, shortly followed with brewing up. The combination of dark-red earth rich on iron and suitable climate allowed hop growing of premium quality and reputation. The cornerstone of the brewery was put down on 20th June 1798 in place of former royal castle next to the barracks and already in 1801, 840 barrels of beer (42,000 l) was brewed. When presenting the Žatec Brewery, the “Žatec” place of origin was always emphasized since its foundation. This signature was necessary with respect to large number of breweries around this famous hop area. Ambient “non-regional” breweries wanted at least to parasite in localization with appendices like “… at Žatec”, “…in Žatec area”, “… we brew up from the Žatec hops” etc. However, the occupants of Žatec region do recognize pretty well their original brewery and are rightly proud of it. Today, the Žatec brewery offers excursions into brewery with degustation. The tour route copies the brewing procedure from brewing house to racking room.
