Top Hop - FARMA „CHMELAŘ DEŠTNICE“

In East-South corner of the Louny district lies Deštnice, known to hop public as a village with long tradition of hop growing and in 20th century Dr. Osvald worked here in Deštnice and set the ground for modern hop growing. The plant breeding works started here in local plant breeding station, where the Osvald’s clones were produced. This hop is the basis of delicate aromatic hops from the Žatec area. The oldest note about Deštince is from the year 1368 when the knight Jindřich from Bezděkov settled here. The name of this village (Rainville) has probably something to do with rainfall situation here during the Middle Age. In October 1992, the CHMELAŘ company was founded, which started to farm on 68 hectares of hop and 550 hectares of remaining agricultural land. Today, the hop is produced on more than 100 hectars of hop-fields. The company V.F.Humulus is operating here on our site which focuses on sanitation of original Osvald’s clones of redder from Žatec. In 1997, testing hop-fields with wide assortment of world hop breeds and research laboratory was built here with support of Japanese brewery Sapporo. In addition to research and production of hop seedlings, analysis of hops for both Czech and foreign breweries are performed here.
